Green Resolution

Start the new year with green resolutions….Instead of making a bunch of loft goals to loose 100 pounds and save 1 million dollars, consider something that not only helps you but also the earth! Take this time to become the lean mean green machine you know you can be. There are so many ways that we can all do our part!

Here are a few things you can do at home to start 2009 out on the earth friendly foot:

Recycle If curbside isnt availabe where you live, search out a recycling site in your area. Most communites provide these services already, you just have to find them. And if they arent available, then by all means, stir the pot and make it so! Visit the following link on the Indiana Dept. of Environmental Management site to find recycling services near you

Compost This is currerently a tricky one in the state of Indiana. The good news is that you can do this one all by yourself! Consider purchasing or building a compost bin for your backyard. Or buy a kitchen compost pail and compost your kitchen scraps. You will be amazed how clean and stink free this can actually be. There are several sites around Indiana where you can take the scraps you’ve collected. Do yourself a favor and research this green resolution first. We wouldnt want you to end up with a bucket of moldy fruit with nowhere to go! Check out the EPA’s website to help get you started!

Clean Green We are soooo lucky to live in a time where there are a wide variety of green cleaning products widely available. You can do just about anything now with green products from washing and waxing your car to doing your laundry! The products are comparable in price to their stinky alternatives and our better for everyone, the planet included. All green cleaning products are environmentally friendly, safe for our water streams, dont contain harsh toxic chemicals that are bad for our family and come in recyclable packaging all the while cleaning just as thoroughly as your tried and true favorites. My favorites are Seventh Generation, Method, and Ecover

The list goes on and on: Drive less walk more, buy local, eat organinc… Only you know what will work best for you. Stick with it, you will be happy with the results, and who doesnt like to feel good! But most importantly…….

Plan a GREEN EVENT in 2009! The folks at Blooming Branch Green Events would be delighted to help you plan any and all of your events in 2009! From Uncle Franks birthday, to your cousins baby shower, to your wedding of 500 people, no event is too big to be green! Let us help make your events green while helping save the planet! We can recycle, we can compost, we can plan the event from the ground up. You dont need to stick it to the earth to save a buck. Think green and save green!

Happy Green Holidays

Happy Holidays to you all! Remember not to get so wrapped up in holiday joy and eggnog induced festivness that you forget to ”think green”. Here are a few simple things you and yours can do to stay green this holiday season:

*Dont go overboard on decorations and trimmings that cant be reused again and again.

*Decorate with natural items that can then be composted post holidays or tossed back out into your backyard or the local forest (ie: cranberry and popcorn garland, pine cones, pine tree branches, etc)

*Challenge yourself to a green tree decorating contest using items (clean items) from your recycling bin to create ornaments, etc. Tin foil peace signs are all the rage at my house this year!

*Instead of sending friends and familiy Christmas Cards, send Christmas emails or better yet, pick up the phone. It doesnt cost anything and wastes no paper. Every year 2.65 billion holiday cards are sold in the U.S. That’s enough to fill a football stadium ten stories high.

*Wrap all your gifts in reusable or recyled packaging. My favorite is newspaper, but pretty linens and even reused christmas wrapping paper work great! Check with your recycling company, most non foil wrapping papers are recylcable (dont forget gift bags are not recylable, but are reusable).

*Buy your gifts locally! Support your amazing local businesses, reduce CO2 emissions and support your local economy!

These are just a few easy green things that anyone can do. They dont require a lot of money and help save the planet for Holidays to come! Wherever and whenever you celebrate, enjoy!

Peace, love, think green
